Google Ad Grant Eligibility Requirements: Does Your Nonprofit Qualify?

After discovering the amazing benefits of the Google Ad Grant, your next question might be, "Is our nonprofit eligible?" Let's face it: Figuring out eligibility for digital programs can feel like navigating a maze in the dark. But don't worry—we've got a flashlight and are here to guide you every step of the way.

First Things First: Who Can Apply?

Google’s eligibility criteria might initially sound intimidating, but they're more straightforward than you think. Here's a quick checklist to see if your nonprofit is ready to apply:

  • 501(c)(3) Status: Your organization must have an active charitable status recognized by the IRS.

  • Website Essentials: Your nonprofit needs a functioning, secure (HTTPS) website that communicates your mission and how you help your community.

  • Non-Discrimination Policy: Your organization must clearly state on your website that it does not discriminate based on race, gender, religion, or other protected categories.

  • GoodStack Validation: Google partners with GoodStack, an international nonprofit validator. To verify your eligibility, you’ll need to register with GoodStack.

  • Complete Google’s Ad Grant Certification: Don’t panic! It’s a short test covering account setup, campaign basics and ad optimization to ensure you understand the basics of the Google Ads platform.

EFM took over management of our Google Grant at a time when I thought it was a dead end and certainly not valuable for fundraising. They used the Google Grant to bring in money within the first few months of management!

Who’s Not Eligible?

Some types of organizations aren't eligible for the Google Grant, including:

  • Government entities (local, state, or federal)

  • Hospitals and healthcare providers (although exceptions occasionally apply)

  • Schools and academic institutions, however, philanthropic arms of educational organizations may qualify.

If you’re not sure, feel free to ask us. Many organizations have assumed they were not eligible and have lost out on this opportunity. Don’t let that be you!

Common Misconceptions About Eligibility

Many nonprofits mistakenly think they don't qualify for the Google Ad Grant because they're smaller, newer, or have had technical issues. Maybe your mission feels too niche or specialized. If you’ve ever worried about any of these, take heart: Countless nonprofits we've worked with initially believed they wouldn't qualify but happily discovered they were perfect candidates!
